Cindy V: Empowering the Next Generation of First-Generation College Students

From First-Generation College Student to Fashion Entrepreneur: Where the Cindy V. Fashion Story Began

Before Cindy V. Fashion became a brand, it was an idea taking shape during my college years.

In May 2019, I graduated from James Madison University as a first-generation college student. Walking across that stage meant more to me than earning a degree. It represented everything my family had sacrificed, the challenges I had overcome, and the beginning of discovering what I truly wanted to build for myself.

Looking back now, college wasn't just where I earned my education.

It's where I began finding my purpose — and where the foundation for Cindy V. Fashion was created.

Being the First

Being a first-generation college student meant entering a world my family couldn't necessarily prepare me for.

There wasn't a roadmap.

I had to learn how to navigate college, internships, networking, career opportunities and professional spaces largely on my own. I watched other students rely on connections and experiences that I simply didn't have access to.

Instead of allowing that to discourage me, it made me resourceful.

I learned to ask questions. I learned to introduce myself. I learned to seek opportunities instead of waiting for them to find me.

Most importantly, I learned how to bet on myself.

That mentality would eventually become one of the most important foundations of my entrepreneurial journey.

Fashion Was Always Part of Me

Long before Cindy V. Fashion existed, fashion was one of the ways I expressed myself.

I loved putting outfits together. I loved the confidence that came from getting dressed and feeling beautiful. I loved how clothing could completely change the energy you brought into a room.

But growing up, I didn't necessarily see fashion as a realistic career.

College changed that.

Being exposed to entrepreneurship, business, marketing, networking and new opportunities helped me realize that the things I naturally loved could become something bigger.

I didn't have to choose between being a businesswoman and loving fashion.

I could build a business around the thing I loved.

The Beginning of Cindy V. Fashion

During my final year at James Madison University, that realization began turning into action.

In 2019, the same year I graduated, Cindy V. Fashion was born.

At first, I didn't have everything figured out.

I didn't have a massive budget, a fashion-industry network or some perfect blueprint showing me exactly how to build a brand.

What I had was an idea, a love for fashion and the determination to figure everything else out along the way.

College had taught me something incredibly valuable: sometimes you don't need to know every step before you start.

You just need enough confidence to take the first one.

More Than Clothes

As Cindy V. Fashion developed, I began understanding why fashion had always meant so much to me.

It wasn't simply about clothes.

It was about the feeling.

When I put together an outfit that made me feel beautiful, I carried myself differently. I felt more confident. More powerful. More willing to walk into a room and own my presence.

That's the feeling I wanted other women to experience.

It eventually became one of the philosophies behind Cindy V. Fashion:

When you look good, you feel good. And when you feel good, you become unstoppable.

Fashion became my way of helping women see themselves differently.

My Salvadoran Roots, My American Education

My journey has also always existed between two worlds.

I was born in El Salvador and built much of my life and education in the United States.

For years, I didn't fully understand how those two parts of my story would eventually come together.

Today, they are becoming central to the future of Cindy V. Fashion.

What started during my college years has grown into a brand with roots in both the United States and El Salvador — including the opening of a Cindy V. Fashion store in El Salvador and collaborations with Salvadoran creatives.

The very things that once made my path feel different are now some of the things that make my vision distinctive.

College Gave Me More Than a Degree

James Madison University gave me an education, but my college experience also forced me to discover who I was.

It pushed me outside of what was familiar.

It taught me how to network.

It taught me how to advocate for myself.

It introduced me to entrepreneurship and helped me recognize opportunities I hadn't known existed.

And somewhere throughout that journey, the girl who simply loved getting dressed began seeing herself as someone who could build something of her own.

That's ultimately one of the greatest things education gave me:

the confidence to imagine a bigger life for myself.

From Graduation to the Fashion Industry

When I graduated in May 2019, I couldn't have predicted exactly where Cindy V. Fashion would take me.

The journey since then hasn't been perfect or linear. Building a business rarely is.

There have been lessons, pivots, risks, mistakes and moments where I've had to figure things out as I went.

But that first-generation mentality has never left me.

Find the opportunity.
Do the research.
Build the relationship.
Figure it out.
Keep going.

It's the same mentality that got me through college, and it's the mentality I continue bringing into Cindy V. Fashion today.

For the First-Generation Girl With a Dream

If you're the first person in your family trying something — whether that's going to college, starting a business, entering an industry where nobody looks like you or pursuing a dream your family doesn't completely understand — your path may look different.

You may have to ask more questions.

You may have to create your own connections.

You may have to learn things other people were taught long before you arrived.

But being first also teaches you something powerful:

how to create a path where one didn't exist before.

I entered college as a first-generation student trying to figure out my future.

I left with an education, a stronger sense of who I was, and the beginning of an idea.

And that idea was only the beginning.
